Residential Garbage Truck Helper

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Garbage Truck Helper is responsible to for assisting with garbage collection services in order to ensure that garbage is collected, transported and disposed of in an appropriate manner. The position will be responsible for helping the driver of a garbage truck on specified routes to mechanically and manually collect solid waste and transport it to appropriate disposal sites. Daily work will involve heavy industrial lifting, lifting waist high, gripping with hands, moving at a brisk consistent pace, and occasional bending. This position will also be responsible for safely, efficiently, and courteously serving customers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist with the operation of the garbage truck in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life

2. Collect garbage from buildings, businesses and other facilities as per schedule to ensure garbage is removed, transported and disposed of according to set policies and procedures

Main Activities:

• Collect garbage from residential buildings, businesses and other facilities

• Maintain daily records of pick-ups

• Pick up refuse in other areas as required

• Dispose of garbage according to set policies and procedures

Knowledge

The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

• knowledge of truck and equipment safety

• knowledge of sewage collection and disposal

• knowledge of garbage collection and disposal procedures

• knowledge of scheduling system and procedures

• knowledge of record keeping system

• knowledge of equipment

• cleaning standards and procedures

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Physically able to push or pull independently (unassisted) 50 pounds between 800 and 1000 times a day.

• Physically able to lift independently (unassisted) 50 pounds from the ground to waist height between 800 and 1000 times a day.

• Physically able to get up and down from the cab of a commercial motor vehicle between 800 and 1000 times a day.

• Physically able to bend at the waist and knees between 800 and 1000 times a day.

• Physically able to work 8 to 12 hours in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain and snow).

• Ability to ride on the outside of the truck while servicing residential customers.
